I spoke with both insurance adjusters, mine and his, about the status of my claim. His insurance, Allstate, has accepted responsibility. This wasn’t a surprise given that the guy who hit me received a citation for failure to yield.

Kinja'd!!!

Stare-down between the WRX and the Accord.

The surprise is how long this is going to take. Both adjusters said they couldn’t get anyone out to see the damage until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week! DANG!

On the positive side, I discovered that the rental allowance with my insurance is better than with his, so I can keep the larger car I traded for yesterday. Oh, yeah! I didn’t post about that! Meet the Sonata:

Kinja'd!!!

It looks like I’ll be driving this for a while. I do have to say it is MUCH better than the Corolla.

More to come....

Ugh that sucks man (about your WRX). I hope whoever does the body work does a nice job. The two times I have had one of my cars hit, I have sold/traded them shortly thereafter because they never looked the same. Either because of where the car was hit or because of poor paint work.

I hit a deer in my 04' STi (drivers corner) so the hood, bumper, and fender were all damaged. the paint/body work was so bad that I took it back and had them try again. By the time they called to say that it was finished for the second time, I had all but traded it. I never even saw it again, the dealer that I bought my E46 from picked it up for me haha.

Aren’t there more exciting options? Like a Fiat 500? Or a Mirage?

Thoughts on the Sonata? My inlaws have a 2004 Altima 2.5 that’s dying a slow death and I’m trying to get them in something comparable, newer, not ugly and comfortable enough for both of them to drive - he’s 6'5", she’s 5'2"

These are the things I am worrying about. The body shop is where the local dealer sends their clients, so I have some hope.

First impressions are pretty good. My kids said it has more backseat room than my wife’s Explorer. I was having a little trouble getting comfortable, but that may be me being picky. The difference in height between me and my wife isn’t as great as your in-laws, but it is somewhat similar. I’ll have her drive it and get her impressions.

I did have trouble with my hat hitting the headliner when I looked left, but not as bad as the Corolla. I may have fixed it by dropping the seat height a bit, but I’m still not happy with the seating position.

I’ll drive it a bit more and let everyone know what I think.

Sure! They had a Challenger available. I just have to pay the difference in price ($20-30 a day). Given that I will probably have this several weeks, I opted to stick with what the insurance would cover.

Well something like a Challenger is going to be more expensive. I mean something cheaper but funner to drive?

Insurance companies and toaster car buyers think: bigger car = better car. So you can usually get a fun car for super cheap while a boring full-size sedan is more expensive.

Several years ago when I got my Mustang, no more than a month if ownership and I got tboned. It was fairly minor, but it was weeks before I got it back. I was issued a Mitsubishi Diamante. It could be worse.

In a word, nope.

I also have to think about everything else I have to load every day - two kids, three backpacks, a saxophone, and a couple of duffels with track gear (change of clothes in one, a couple of shot, a couple of discus, and a couple of starting blocks in the other).

And occasionally, a wife. :)

But don’t you get to pick the body shop? Last year a cab clipped my right rear quarter panel and sped off when I got out the car to talk to him. I picked my own body shop even after the insurance explained how their certified body shops will warranty the work and blah blah blah.

I wasn’t having any of it, the place I took my car had 2 cars they were fixing: M6 GC that got rear ended and a Rolls Royce Ghost that had been scraped by a Semi across the entire side from fender to fender total cost on that job was $34,000. I knew my car was in good hands there.

Research your own body shop, don't settle. I picked the body shop for my car that at the time was working on a M6 Grancoupe that was rear ended and a RR Ghost that had been scraped fender to fender by a Semi truck (bill was $34k!) I knew my car was in good hands there.

That would all fit in a Honda Fit. Hah. Or a Fiesta.

I dropped Allstate years ago, my car was in a flood, took 3 weeks to get an adjuster out (mind you I called them while it was still underwater). They then said it was not totaled and declared the only damage was it needed cleaning. I had to appeal to get them to total the car (it was very dead).

I’d blame Allstate for the delay, but I’m getting the same timeframe with my own insurance.

You do get to pick the shop. I had two people recommend the shop I took it to. It also has decent ratings on the ‘net.

I guess I’ll find out!

I know right. It also got worse gas mileage.

Make sure you look at your car under multiple lighting conditions, some things are not easy to see until you are in the sun or under some strong LED lighting.

Tell me about it. This is my wife’s Explorer after it was repaired. It’s supposed to go in for a repaint sometime next week.

Yes, I could have picked but the boutique body shop that I would normally use. However, at the time they wanted almost 1k more than insurance was willing to dish out. Also I was 19/20 at the time so I thought well it’s a Subaru that I’m not planning on keeping forever, nor did I have an extra G laying around to throw at bodywork.

To add to that when I saw the initial damage I was already looking for a new car lol.

My mom just had a rental sonata after her Nitro got wacked in an intersection, I gotta say that Android auto and bluetooth audio is missed, totally gutless engine and trans though, and absolutely no brake feel

I scheduled a review of the Sonata to post in the morning. I conned my wife into taking a drive (she’s the same height as your mother-in-law). She said it’s a bit hard to see out, but she didn’t spend a lot of time adjusting the seat height. It fits me fine, but then again, I’m not 6'5". You can see my other thoughts in the morning.

I have had a rental Sonata on a business trip NJ to VA (nice 7 hour ride). It was actually quite a comfortable car for that trip. Much better than the Accent I had with no cruise control a couple months later! Quite roomy for the backseat passenger and three people of luggage. Comfortable, quick enough, fuel efficient, and it looks pretty decent. I enjoy it more than a Camry or Accord.
